ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Lithium-ion batteries sparked a house fire near 18th Street and 240th Avenue in Brighton around 1:00 p.m. on Thursday when a homeowner was charging a battery for a six-foot drone—crews from Kansasville Fire and Rescue and Salem Lakes Fire and Rescue responded immediately—and fire officials warned against charging large batteries indoors for safety.  TMJ-4

  • Kenosha man Zachary J. Simon, 31, was charged with violent domestic assault after police said he choked his partner and smashed her phone to stop her from calling 911 while holding a small child (he is held on $4,000 cash bail) (the incident was reported on May 23 at 6:38 p.m.)  Kenosha County Eye
  • A Georgia man, Oscar Fabin Rivera-Hernandez, 37, from Alpharetta was taken to Kenosha County intake court on May 23 after being caught driving a stolen truck with counterfeit VINs — prosecutors described the case as highly suspicious with concerns about his flight risk.  Kenosha County Eye
  • A Kentucky man with multiple felony convictions admitted to possessing a stolen firearm during a highway stop near the state line and appeared in Kenosha County court on one count of possession by an out-of-state felon with bail set at $15,000—his preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 30.  Kenosha County Eye
  • Two Kenosha County deputies resigned yesterday before they could be fired after investigations found one concealed his criminal history and deceived officials while the other showed a dangerous pattern in his behavior—officials said the resignations were quiet to avoid public scrutiny.  Kenosha County Eye

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Nearly 1,400 Gateway Technical College graduates were honored on May 23 at two commencement ceremonies held in the fieldhouse at UW-Parkside — graduates either finished coursework last summer, fall or spring or are set to receive certificates by summer's end. Wes Saber served as the main speaker and outgoing President Ritu Raju will leave next month while the Gateway Board meets Friday to select an interim president.  WGTD

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On May 23rd, journalist Kevin Mathewson won his third legal battle and exposed a secret courtroom process where illegal immigrants avoided charges for driving without a license—practices that were shielded under former DA Michael Graveley’s leadership. Newly elected DA Xavier Solis ended the program in January and released the hidden records, showing a commitment to transparency in the county.  Kenosha County Eye
