  • Salem Lakes Fire Department has installed a Safe Haven Baby Box—providing parents in crisis a secure option to drop off newborn infants for immediate care, with officials stating the box will be monitored closely.  Kenosha News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Wintrust’s subsidiary, State Bank of the Lakes, announced plans to build the first private development at the Kenosha Innovation Neighborhood—this new branch will offer banking services and a conference room for community use. Construction will begin later this year and the branch is expected to open in 2026.  Kenosha County Eye
  • Wintrust Financial will build the first private development in the Innovation Neighborhood with a new State Bank of the Lakes branch that will provide community banking and a conference room for nonprofits. Construction will begin later this year and the branch is set to open in 2026— a key step in turning a 107-acre former industrial site into an innovation hub— and city leaders say it will boost local business.  WLIP

CRIME NEWS

  • Jose L. Cervantes, 41, of Kenosha, was in court Thursday on charges of battery and disorderly conduct—he is accused of throwing a glass beer bottle at his wife and punching her repeatedly during a domestic dispute.  Kenosha County Eye
  • Nicole Platt, 47, of Kenosha — who pleaded guilty to a felony for a scheme that fraudulently secured millions in government contracts — is serving a four-month sentence in federal prison.  Kenosha County Eye

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A county-funded study released on July 17 found that Kenosha County’s emergency response was delayed during the 2020 unrest, with the Emergency Operations Center activated only after most of the damage and two demonstrators died—raising questions over command decisions such as the reluctance of police leadership to engage in a unified response. County officials, including Sheriff Dave Zoerner, briefed the board on changes already planned like increased training and the installation of a new cell phone alert system.  WGTD
  • A federal bill passed by the U.S. Senate this week could remove nearly $9 billion in funding from public broadcasting, putting local station WGTD at risk of reduced support—House approval is pending before Friday's deadline.  TMJ-4
