COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Franks Diner will celebrate its centennial this Saturday with a day-long block party in downtown Kenosha. The historic diner started in the 1920s but opened a year late, and current owners Kevin Ervin and Julie Rittmiller plan to mark the event with food and fun—highlighting its unique legacy.  WGTD

CRIME NEWS

  • Juan Quintero, a 46-year-old from Kenosha accused of slashing another man with a machete while facing multiple felony charges, was given $5,000 cash bail Tuesday—prosecutors called the incident violent given his past bond violations.  Kenosha County Eye
  • A 56-year-old man from Kenosha was charged with a felony after he attacked his 85-year-old father in a late-night dispute—he was ordered to post $1,500 bail and will have a preliminary hearing on September 17.  Kenosha County Eye
  • Illinois man Julio C. Rojas, 35, accused of selling cocaine in Twin Lakes in 2021 and released on a $5,000 bond, skipped his court appearance on March 6 and was re-arrested on September 5 — his bail was set at $5,000 and he is due for a preliminary hearing on September 12.  Kenosha County Eye

CULTURE NEWS

  • Southeast Wisconsin students from National Youth Theatre will perform Willy Wonka JR. at Reuther High School later this fall—opening on Oct 31 with a special 11 a.m. school-day show and continuing with public shows at 7 p.m. on Oct 31, at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Nov 1, and at 2 p.m. on Nov 2 at the Ralph J. Houghton Performance Center.  Kenosha County Eye
  • Kenosha will host Accessible Art for All, a free art fair and fundraiser at the Anderson Arts Center—6603 3rd Ave—on Sunday, September 28 from 1–4 PM. A guest speaker, Phil Gayter, will give an art talk at 2 PM while local artists display work and community partners offer resources to boost accessible arts programming.  Kenosha.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Wisconsin-Parkside welcomed nearly 900 new undergraduates this fall—an 8.4% increase from last fall—and will enroll over 1,000 students across undergraduate and graduate programs including a record high dual enrollment group. Chancellor Lynn Akey said the school is adding programs such as a new Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies to link student success with local employer needs.  WLIP

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kenosha County Executive Samantha Kerkman said Tuesday that budget planning is well underway as supervisors review a five-year plan for projects and repurpose state grant funds to speed up work on 911 services — the plan includes upgrades like a new generator at Brookside Care Center. She said the full budget will be presented to the County Board on Oct. 7 so supervisors can ask questions and share feedback.  WLIP
  • At Monday night's Village Board meeting, Salem Lakes Fire Chief Al Carr announced he rescinded his retirement and will remain in his role—this decision follows the village spending $12,500 on a search firm that narrowed the replacement pool to ten applicants.  Kenosha County Eye
